Waited by J-Boy

Kalakuta Records 2001

Waited is a reflection of the experiences of J-Boy in many facets of his life as well as that of his family. From a humble beginning in the mining township of Mt Isa, northwest Queensland, J-Boy has emerged as one of the promising young performers in the country. Ade Kukoyi, founder of Kalakuta Records – a Brisbane-based recording company that specialises in nurturing up and coming artists, has described J-Boy as one of the truly emerging young talents in the Australian music industry. “He is a very shy, unassuming and level-headed person, but beneath that shyness is a genuine will to succeed. What you see is what you get”, says Ade Kukoyi.

The recording of Waited has been a journey and experience for all those involved. The ability to invent new musical style, particularly in the R & B sphere is not an easy feat. Waited has been a revelation in forging R & B with Aboriginal tribal lyrics and chants. From the smooth, romantic sounds of 2 Time Girl (Track 2) to the message-conveying lyrics of Shake-A-Leg (Track 4), Brothers (Track 5) and the tribal-infested chants of Waited (Club mix – Track 6), one is certain to be entertained by the new musical style that has been branded Indijiblu.

Shake-A-Leg is a reminder to many young indigenous Australians to continue to take pride in their heritage, culture (song & dance) and identity. “We live in an era when some of our younger people often turn to the undesirable aspects of life when all seems lost. This is often the result of total despair and loss of hope emanating from a multiplicity of pressure within society” says J-Boy. I try to address those issues by incorporating a message of cultural pride and self-esteem in my music, he added.

Brothers encourage many young people to hold on to their dreams in life regardless of the hardships or obstacles that they may have endured along the way. If you have faith, you will eventually make it. It is only a matter of time. As part of the lyrics say – Quote

I know you gonna make it
It took a few years to realise
You gotta open up those eyes and see
I know you gonna make it.

Indeed, J-Boy has Waited for a while to finally release his debut CD and realise his dream. From his performances at the Barambah Beltout Festival in Queensland over the past four years, he has matured undoubtedly as an exiting R & B singer / songwriter.

There are many issues and challenges for young Australians in today’s society. For young indigenous Australians the challengers are even greater. J-Boy attempts to overcome some of these obstacles through the message in Brother – a song that encourages people to hold onto their dreams regardless of their circumstances.
