Once Upon a Dreamtime

“Once Upon a Dreamtime” by Maroochy Barambah is a collection of songs and stories of the Turrbal people (the Traditional Owners of Brisbane) and the Gubbi Gubbi people of the Sunshine Coast area.   In the 1970s while Maroochy was still living in Melbourne, Uncle Zac Martin (an actor of Gubbi Gubbi descent) requested her to record the stories and legends of the Gubbi Gubbi people. It must have been something very special to Uncle Zac. Every so often, whenever he visited Maroochy, he would ask her, “where is my recording?” Sadly, Uncle Zac passed away in the early 1980s. He did not live to see this recording.

We dedicate some of these stories/poetry to his memory, as we know deep in our hearts, that his spirit remains fervently with us till this day.

It was around the late 1980s that Maroochy came across the book Along the Sunshine Coast by Alf Wood in a Melbourne bookshop where she was browsing through some literature. She was quite fascinated by these stories of her people which had been recorded by a non-indigenous Australian.

With the request of Uncle Zac still vividly clear in her mind, Maroochy felt that she had come across something special. In her own words, she “admired the stories for several years”. Ultimately, in 1996, Maroochy decided that it was time to turn these stories into song and dance. She made the effort to track down the writer, Alf Wood.
